How To Move Out Of Your Parents House With No Money

If you are just now making the move out of your parents home you may find the amount of money required to live on your own a bit of a shocker.

People are faced with deposits for new living spaces, costs of the move itself, and maintaining cash for daily living. With all these expenses it can begin to really add up.

Here are some options you can try to help fund your cross country move with your no money situation:

  • Ask your parents for a loan– Reassure them you will pay it back one you get situated and back on your feet
  • Ask a friend if they’re up for a road trip– If you have a friend who has a truck maybe they’d be willing to help you with your move (cheaper than renting a u-haul).
  • Ask friends for packing supplies– Packing supplies (boxes, packing paper, tape) can add up to unnecessary costs ask around to see if anyone has any extras
  • Get rid of things– Yep sell unnecessary things to make some extra money. Decluttr is a great place to sell unneeded electronics.
  • Make Money– There are really easy things you can do to make money to fund a move. I have a really good friend who makes $400 a month by donating plasma. You can also take super easy surveys in your free time to make a couple hundred dollars a month.

Through our experiences, we have learned what works and what doesn’t work when moving to a new city. We have learned what it takes to move to a new city without any money or a job.

We have also learned how to overcome obstacles and appreciate the situation we are in. Read on to learn my top pointers.

Perspective Is Everything When Moving With No Money

People gain great life experiences by exploring new areas and obviously by moving to a new area.  People have the opportunity to experience new cultures, meet people from all walks of life, and gain new perspectives on things that were once unfamiliar.

It’s scary moving to a new place, especially when you’re moving with no money or a job but do you know what? The fear of failure is what holds people back.

What’s the worst thing that can happen? You’re out a bit of money and you were provided an opportunity to see something new.  I am a huge advocate of people taking advantage of new learning experiences and trying different things to broaden their life experiences.

Do Your Research Prior To Moving

There is a lot of research that needs to be done before taking the leap and making any big move.  Several factors come into play such as average salaries, rental or real estate markets, best and worst neigborhoods, average commute times, and the obvious one where to move with no money.

Moving doesn’t have to be difficult if you take the necessary actions beforehand.  By taking the time to do some research you’ll set yourself up for success.

My favorite way to research a new area is to find the local “What’s happening” paper that many cities publish. These papers are a great resource for anyone new to the area.

How To Move To A New City With No Money Or a Job

If you are one of those free spirits who’s making the move without a new job, you will need to learn a bit about the job market in the new location.  It’s good to know if certain skills are in demand and the competitiveness of the job market.

Indeed is always a good way to search for job opportunities in new locations. You can connect with potential work opportunities and meet people with similar interests through job boards, Facebook, Twitter, and Linkedin.

I am a firm believer in “It’s not what you do in life but who you know”. Remember this, and do some due diligence in searching for career opportunities.

Know your budget

Knowing what you can, and can not afford will make all the difference in your ability to make your move successful. Look at your budget and be realistic about the living costs in the new city. Have you created any sort of “secret savings account”  to help make your move less stressful?

It can be difficult to foresee all the costs associated with a move but this is an essential part of your planning. When looking into costs you should factor in all things moving related, its crazy how quickly moving costs can really add up.

Also, take into consideration that you will need to have a solid down payment or rental deposit for your new home.

Begin Networking Before You Make The Move

Please don’t underestimate the power of networking.  Do you know a friend of a friend in your city of choice?  If you aren’t a big fan of social media platforms I suggest you spend just a bit of time taking advantage of the opportunities these platforms can provide for you.

Facebook and Linkedin are fantastic platforms for networking with people. Many cities have Facebook pages or community-specific pages. Take a moment and see if you can discover any of these hidden gems.

By doing a bit of networking early on you may find that you fall into something that is a perfect fit for yourself. You never know, you could find a perfect roommate, job, or rental through these pages.

Learn To Live With Less To Allow For You To Move

Any move that a person makes is MUCH easier if you have less stuff to be relocated.  My favorite saying is “Learn to live with less so that you are able to experience more.”

I challenge everyone to give it a shot, see if you are able to eliminate one item from your life.  You may find that what you thought to be important in your life really isn’t so important after all.

Experiences and good relationships are what create great life memories its not the things that we own.
